The Red Sea has parted

That is exactly what Michelle Obama’s highly debated red and black dress reminded me of. The Passage of the Red Sea marks the crossing into the Promised Land. And November 4th marked a new era for American politics and international relations.

Designed by as part of Narciso Rodriguez’s spring 09 collection, the scoop-neck dress made a statement. For or against, Mrs. O’s ladylike, luxe swagger was able to pull it of with grace and style. I wonder what she will wear for the inauguration?

Do the G.R.E.E.N.

Here is a tremendous initiative that will make us all a little bit GREENER. When you purchase one of the totes at MyBagCares.com, a tree is planted in your name! These bags are not only an excellent -- and very much needed -- alternative to plastic bags, but they're also made of linen + untreated cotton, only. Each bag holds more than six bags worth of groceries -- hmm...that is if you're single -- and so for more than 10.000 trees have been planted. Do I need to mention that these adorable bags come in 4 different styles?
To all those who are still holding on to their ghetto plastic bags -- you know what I'm talking about -- make that move right now!

Order your bag here... you'll get free tree with that.

Goodbye

Yesterday, Africa lost one of its musical giants; Miriam Makaba died of heart attack at the age of 76, after a performance in Italy. A symbol of freedom and resistance, Makeba, who was forced into exile for more than 30 years during the Apartheid regime was the quintessential Artivist, a woman who used her music as a weapon to tell us of the suffering of her people.

Rest in Peace Mama Africa

Love it or Hate it?
I choose to love it!
I have just ordered my copy of MK+Ashley Olsen's new coffee table book: Influence. With 4 sections on Fashion, Environment, Art and Giving Back, filled with 22 influential actors, artists, and designers, alongside personal mementos and stellar photographs, this was a definite must have. Listen to an Interview with the Olsen's.

Creative Persuasion

During the US of A election season a plethora of independent, political posters, both serious and satirical, for or against, have invaded this election season.
AIGA hosted a Get Out the Vote 2008 campaign, aiming to increase voter participation. Best of all, you can print your favs for free! More posters can be found via Ebony Magazine.

Note:
I tried my best to find well-designed McCain and independent posters. I really did. But alas, no luck.

The plight of the creative

Get Schooled

It was not love at first or second sight but CW’s Stylista is growing on me. All the same, I can’t place my finger on it but something is just not right. I do not know if it is the Devil Wears Pradaesque Vogue Elle editor, the hyperventilating young man (bless him) or the Real World-like, housemate antics.
Last week’s challenge involved the use of fashion + sewing terminology. I was surprised that the contestants did not even know the basics? Sheer, pleats, woven,… shame! Though, I have to give them props for creating one outfit. Check out mine!

1. Pintuck Ivory silk blouse (Chloé)
2. Knit Oversized wool cardi-coat (Stella McCartney)
3. Pleat-front shorts (Chloé)
4. Woven Nico stiletto heels (Brian Atwood)
5. Darted Blazer
6. Sheer + Empire Grace Waking chemise (Stella McCartney)
